STREET FOOD

While strolling through the streets of Greek towns, small booths or stands with goodies, which we call street food, attract special attention. The Greeks are especially fond of their traditional dishes “fast". We present the most delicious of them.

SOUVLAKI

To be able to describe the stay in Greece as a successful tourist duty is to taste one of the most popular fast food-souvlaki. These are pieces of pork or chicken breast on a skewer stick. They are grilled and usually served with a lemon wedge and bread. It is also worth noting that in the vicinity of Athens, souvlaki may be referred to by the locals as kalamaki. What's more, while strolling through the streets of Greece, you may also encounter souvlaki me pita. These are souvlaki, which, after baking on the grill, go to a delicious bun with additions.

PITAKIA

Pitakia are dumplings made of filo pastry or puff pastry. Unlike Polish dumplings, they are deep-fried or baked in the oven. Depending on the filling, they have different names: Tiropita is dumplings with cheese, spanakopita with spinach, kotopita with chicken, laukanopita with sausages and patatopita with potatoes.

BOUGATSA

Bougatsa, for a change from the rest of Street food, is served in the morning. The search for a Greek breakfast must end with bougats! It is a sweet filo pastry dessert with a delicious custard filling, fragrant with cinnamon, vanilla and lemon zest. A crunchy dessert should be ordered with a cup of coffee, which guarantees moments of relaxation for the spirit and palate!

LOUKOUMADES

Originating in Greece, but also known in Turkey or Cyprus, deep-fried round balls. They resemble our Polish donuts, because the dough is made of yeast, milk and wheat flour. They are served whole covered with honey syrup or, for special gourmets, sprinkled with cinnamon. Regulations usually vary from area to area. Loukomades are a quick snack because of their size. We can take them with us on trips. Legends say that these little sweets were given as gifts during the Greek Olympic Games. This doesn't surprise us because they are irresistible, one of the unrivalled sweets to be found in Hellad.

KOULOURAKIA

As you have noticed yourself, street food in Greece is not only savory snacks. One of the sweet starters is koulourakia. These are butter-based cakes, hand-formed into a ring shape, covered with egg glaze, most often sprinkled with sesame seeds. They have a sweet, delicate flavor with a hint of vanilla, sometimes a clove is put on the center for flavor. We can often find other shapes of cookies, they can be circles, eights, wreaths, horseshoes or Greek letters. Most often, we can taste these delicacies with coffee or tea.

PEINIRLI

Peinirli is a dish that came to Greece about 100 years ago with the Pontic Greeks after the Greco-Turkish War in Asia Minor. Its name comes from the Turkish word peynir, meaning cheese. This dish is called a Greek pizza for a reason. It is a boat-shaped yeast cake with any toppings such as cheese, meat or vegetables. Crunchy on the outside and soft inside, the delicacy will surely delight your taste buds!
